Great for developing coordinationAug 04, 2010 Sampled this in a store, and was impressed. But unsure about buying it, because it costs over [...]in the country I live in.
This is more challenging than most hammer toys, because you need to get just the right touch (or maybe I should say whack) to send the ball onto the path. You need to hit the red spot just right. Kids (and adults) will need to experiment with different whacks until they find one that works all the time. It's not just the speed and strength that you hit it with, but also the speed you pull away with. (I think of it as a reflex action.) I think this would be a great toy for kids learning piano, or anything else where the finding the right touch is important.
Moreover, kids can't play this without the hammer, like they can with most hammer toys where they just push the pegs/balls through with their fingers. They need to use the hammer, and they need to use it correctly.
However, this will be a turn-off to fans of open-ended toys, because there's not much you can do with it other than hit the red dot to make the ball go up (or try to catch the ball when somebody else whacks it). The price seems a little high for a toy with only one use (especially if you have to pay over [...]).
Solid construction, suvives little twin boysFeb 07, 2010 We got this toy for the boys, both about 17 months, and it has survived their best attempts at destruction. The wood is good and thick, and the paint is more of a very bright stain than paint, so no chipping. All in all, it's a durable toy that the kids will love to whack.
Pounding What?Jan 05, 2010 Did not like this toy. A flat stick needs to be inserted before you can hammer the red ball to make the other ball go up and around. First my 18 mo old can not figure out what, how or why you need to insert the stick. Second it takes a really hard wack to make the ball move. It is made well and pretty but useless.

good for motor skills...Aug 28, 2009 Got this when my daughter was about 16 months.....it didn't capture her attention for long periods of time...i mean there is only so much times you can hit it for enjoyment. but it is good for building eye and hand coordination which was the primary focus when I decided to purchase this product.

Love itJul 10, 2009 This small, simple toy is surprisingly fun to play with. Not only is it really pretty to look it and superb quality, but it's educational and fun.
