Good but leaksJul 13, 2010 I like this for making baby food for my 8 month old. It makes a good consitancy for a baby that has already started with some solids. It won't get it fine enough for a new eater. The only thing I don't like about it is that it leaks out the bottom so you have to use it over the sink. I bought it hoping to take it to restaurants but I can't imagine doing that if it leaks.

Hard to operate, hard to clean, leaks liquids, and can't handle harder foodsJun 11, 2010 We were extremely disappointed with this food mill. We expected to be able to quickly and easily make baby food out of whatever we were eating, but we never found much use for it. It's hard to operate and hard to clean, but we could live with that if it made good baby food; it doesn't. We also couldn't take it out anywhere, because itleaks liquid from mashed food out of the bottom. It also can't handle harder foods (like, say, well-cooked Brussels sprouts, or any leafy vegetables). Basically, if you can't mash it into baby food with a fork, you can't use this on it. If you add a mix of harder and softer foods, it will push the soft stuff through the grate and compress the hard food into a little patty, and the juices will run out of the bottom.

compared to the KidCo food millJun 05, 2010 I prefer this in almost all ways to the KidCo food mill of similar shape and function. (This is not to say the KidCo is a bad product. I simply prefer the Green Sprouts one. The one reason I can see for the KidCo might be if your baby is just starting solid foods, and this is because the KidCo has smaller holes in the grinding surface and hence makes food slightly less textured. The KidCo also came with an extra gasket, and some versions come with a carrying case.)
Pros of the Green Sprouts:
--Bigger overall, meaning more room in the base to fill with food and more room in the bowl for milled food. It also has a 'pour' spout on the bowl.
--Easier to understand. The Green Sprouts directions were longer and clearer.
--Easier to use. The KidCo is stiffer and harder to push down and harder to turn.
--Easier to disassemble. The KidCo is a pain in the rear to get apart. I often have to jam a toothpick in one of the holes in the grate to get the top to unscrew. By comparison, I just tighten the easy-turn knob on the Green Sprouts' central post and then unscrew the top.
--Easier to clean. I frequently have to painstakingly use a toothpick to poke food out of the tiny holes in the grate on the KidCo. With the Green Sprouts the holes are bigger and food rinses right out.
--Stainless steel both on the turning part that crushes the food and on the grate that the food squishes through.
(As for the reviewer who had this 'explode'... it must either be a fluke or she was grinding counterclockwise instead of clockwise. I have never had that problem with this mill, nor do I see how it would even be possible.)
Keep in mind that this isn't a blender and food will end up a bit textured. But for what it claims to do, the Green Sprouts carries through 100%.

Great baby food makerMar 24, 2010 My wife purchased this food mill for our 8-month old daughter and it has been a great baby food maker. It is very user-friendly, and my wife likes the fact that the blade part is made of metal. This food mill does not puree food completely; there are small chunks of food, and it has not been an issue. This perhaps may be the perfect product to make foods for those babies who are in-between eating stages. It works wonderfully with pasta, fruits, vegetables, etc. The only downside is that it leaks when we grind fruits and vegetables. We have had to place a plate underneath the mill to collect the liquids. Overall, it is a great product, and I would recommend to other parents with young babies. It is also very easy to clean. We are not tree-huggers but it is nice to know that we are not adding harmful chemicals to our baby's food.
Decent baby food millMar 23, 2010 If you don't set your expectations too high, this food mill works just fine. Obviously, it isn't a food processor, so it can't handle anything too dense, and it does not puree. But, as long as the foods you grind are cooked well and cut into small pieces, the mill does a good job of grinding it into a smoother texture for the baby and straining out the more fibrous parts. We are happy with this product, and it is very easy to clean!
