Good for the priceJul 23, 2010 We bought this for our 2 year son. He really likes the harmonica. It's his favorite. He also likes the xyliphone. The castanedas and the shaker are not as fun. The kazoo does not seem to work very well. It is a durable set. Overall, we are pleased with this set for the price.
SO so disappointedMay 27, 2010 This just came in the mail and I ran here to write a review.
It's going back ASAP.
The kazoo makes NO noise.
The harmonica takes huge effort to make sound with.
The xylophone is ok.
The finger symbols don't work at all. I tried to retie the straps and had no success.
I recognize some people have loved this toy, however, it's clear the product is inconsistent with it's quality.
BEWARE.
I Love Melissa & DougMay 24, 2010 I thought I'd weigh in on this set because of the bad reviews... I bought this for my 10 month old and we have a lot of fun playing with this set together. We bought the second set with the tambourine in it first and love it too (if you have younger kids and are buying only one set to start out, this set may have more usable instruments for them). He loves to put the kazoo in my mouth for me to play while he hammers away on the xylophone. My kazoo works fine, perhaps some people don't know how to play it? You don't just blow through it, you kinda have to "talk" in it to get the membrane to vibrate. I don't mind that the xylophone isn't terribly loud... so many toys are so loud these days, I find the organic sound kinda refreshing. The castanets and harmonica are a bit to mature for him yet, but work fine. I only wish the harmonica was made of metal instead of plastic. I'm so excited about M & D's musical sets, I just ordered their piano the other day too. I can't wait! Overall, I'd recommend this set and buy it again.
Melissa and Doug Beginner Band SetMar 22, 2010 I don't write reviews very often but had to because Melissa and Doug thoroughly disappoint me with this chinzy band set. Like another reviewer stated, the wood is unfinished and rough. The Kazoo doesn't work at all and the xylophone hardly makes any noise. I could have gotten a much better set at Target. Way disappointing. I am shocked too because normally Melissa and Doug make very good products.
Not a good set, except for the harmonicaFeb 09, 2010 The Xylophone in this set is crap. It just sounds like wood hitting wood and almost no musical note comes out at all. I think if they put some rubber washers in between it would work better but I'm not sure. The kazoo in my set might have been broken when I got it because it makes no sound. The harmonica is the only redeeming piece in this set, as it is a pretty good one for the price. You should just buy a harmonica separately if you want one though, and skip this set completely. This is a definite "don't buy".
